signed, dated and inscribed 'Just Gantz Madras 1840' (lower left), further inscribed 'In the Grounds of Mr Chambers residence at Grundy, Madras, with Indian natives, a lodge gate and a windmill' (on the old backing paper, according to the previous cataloguing)

Justinian Gantz, along with his father John, was employed as a draughtsman by the East India Company. The family owned a lithographic press in Popham's Broadway, Madras, and also practised as architects.
