PONTING (HERBERT GEORGE)

The Great Wall of China, warm-toned gelatin silver print, mounted in old frame, image to view 395 x 555mm., [1907]

Footnotes

Ponting's magnificent view of the Great Wall of China taken in 1907, having travelled to the Nankow Pass staying in "a local hostel frequented by Mongolian traders and drivers" (Anne Strathie, Herbert Ponting. Scott's Antarctic Photographer, 2021). Best known for his iconic views of the Antarctic, Ponting had built his reputation during his travels in Japan and the east. During the Terra Nova Expedition Robert Scott wrote of Ponting that his "store of pictures seems unending and has been an immense source of entertainment to us during the winter. His lectures appeal to all and are fully attended. This time we had pictures of the Great Wall and other stupendous monuments of North China. Ponting always manages to work in detail concerning the manners and customs of the peoples in the countries of his travels" (Scott's Last Expedition, 1913).
