西藏 十五/十六世紀 銅鎏金綠度母像
Often worshiped as a liberator, Green Tara is a popular goddess known for her supreme compassion. She is believed to have emerged from the tears of Avalokiteshvara as he wept for the suffering of all sentient beings, and is commonly depicted with her right leg outstretched, ready to respond to the suffering of humankind, as in the present example.
Several decorative details, such as the turquoise-inset leaf motif, follow earlier works created by Sonam Gyaltsen, a master sculptor active in Shigatse in the second quarter of the 15th century. However, the lotus petals and her hair bangs are executed differently. For contemporaneous examples similarly inspired by the Sonam Gyaltsen style, see a gilt bronze Tara sold at Bonhams, New York, 23 September 2020, lot 630, and a Vajradhara published in von Schroeder, Buddhist Sculptures in Tibet, Vol.II, Hong Kong, 2003, pp.1064-5, no.272F. Also compare the overall body type, double-layered lower garment, and lotus petals to another Green Tara sold at Bonhams, New York, 13 March 2017, lot 3038.
