A Jones and Son 'British History' series footed bowl, circa 1826-28

The shaped rectangular form printed in blue with the 'DEATH OF LORD NELSON' on board HMS Victory, the wounded Admiral falling backwards into the arms of two comrades, surrounded by his crew and officers, the sides depicting 'Charles I Ordering the Speaker to Give up the Five Members' alternating with vignettes of an enthroned King George IV, the borders with military trophies alternating with union wreaths bearing a crown and mitre, 28.4cm wide, printed 'JONES & SON' and title mark in blue

Footnotes

Jones and Son was only in existence for a short period between circa 1826 and 1828, and the 'British History' series may have been the only dinner service they produced. The series is discussed by A W Coysh and R K Henrywood in The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780-1880 (1982), p.58.
