PROVENANCE
The Lucio's Collection, Sydney
'With the pot, at each stage, for all your determination, you are in the hands of the elements. Earth, Water, mineral mixtures and fire - very much at their mercy'
-John Olsen
Whilst living in Spain in the 1950s, John Olsen encountered the ceramic works of Pablo Picasso who had worked with the Madoura pottery in Vallauris. Enchanted, it wasn't until the late 1960s that Olsen met Robert Mair, a young New Zealand potter who had worked under Les Blakebrough. With Mair throwing and Olsen hand-decorating the resulting vessels, a life long passion was born. Of the satisfaction that came from the process, Olsen tells, 'I began to decorate casserole pots, plates and goblets. It was an extension of my work that suited my natural interest in calligraphy. Now I was writing in the round.' 1
