Of the sporting greats of the late 20th century, only a handful have earned legendary status worldwide and adulation beyond the racetrack, the court, or the pitch, with football icon Diego Maradona lining up in this team of legends.

Off-pitch the maestro of 'the beautiful game' also appreciated beautiful and exotic motor cars such as this 1992 Porsche 911 Type 964 Carrera 2 'Works Turbo Look' Cabriolet, which was delivered new to 'El Diego' in November 1992 during his last season of European football.

Having led his team to UEFA Cup victories and famously a World Cup Victory in 1986, (the tournament featuring the player's 'Hand of God' goal against England in the quarter-finals), Maradona was secured by Seville's team manager and former Argentina coach Carlos Bilardo for a fee of 750 million pesetas (circa €5 million).

'El Diego' was given a hero's welcome when he came to Seville, with the team and fans hoping he would bring the Maradona Magic to the side, having helped Napoli win two Serie A titles and earning the adulation of the Italian fans, before the ignominy of being banned for 15-months from the game for failing a drugs test.

Appointed team captain, he rented the villa of Juan Antonio Ruiz Roman, Spain's most famous bullfighter, and took delivery on 6th November 1992 of the top-of-the-range Porsche. One of only 1,200 Type 964 Carrera 2 Cabriolet 'Works Turbo Look' variants produced in a two-year run, this soft-top supercar was powered by a 250bhp 3.6-litre engine giving it a top speed of 260km/h.

The Porsche was a regular sight on Maradona's drive to and from football training. It also proved that Maradona's right foot was as dominant in the car as his left was on the ball, as he was famously stopped by armed police for jumping a red light and speeding at 180km/h in the city centre (see press cuttings on file).

Despite starting well with an early 3-1 victory over Bayern Munich in a showpiece 'friendly', Maradona made more headlines with his off-pitch party lifestyle.
His recall to Argentina's national team marked the beginning of the end of his 'forgotten season' with Seville and Maradona left the club in June 1993.

A document on file shows that ownership of the Porsche was transferred to one Anjelica Bartel of Calvià, Majorca on 25th September 1993 at 7,500 kilometres. Invoices and other documents on file suggest that the next owner was Mr Bruno Hintze of Ville-d'Avray, France (circa 2000) followed by Mr Jacques Rouy of Jarny, France (circa 2001) and then Mr Guy Della Casa of Montbard, France. Mr Della Casa acquired the Porsche in January 2003 and kept it until 2016 when it was sold to the current vendor.

The original guarantee and maintenance booklet is in Maradona's name and has been stamped on six occasions, most recently by JB Racing in 2004 at circa 105,300 kilometres. An invoice on file shows that the Porsche was professionally repainted in its original colour during the winter of 2016/2017, the rubber seals being renewed at the same time. There are also sundry servicing invoices on file together with Contrôles Techniques showing the odometer reading increasing from 118,753 kilometres in 2011 to 121,493 kilometres in 2016. The current odometer reading is 122,762 kilometres. Freshly serviced by Porsche Centre Bonn and ready to use, this rare Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet, formerly owned by the greatest footballer of his generation, has to be the ultimate in sporting memorabilia.

Parmi les grands sportifs du 20e siècle, seule une poignée ont atteint un statut de légende dans le monde entier et connu une adulation au-delà du circuit, du court ou du ring, l'icône du football Diego Maradona entre dans cette catégorie de légende.

En dehors du stade, le maestro du « beau jeu » appréciait aussi les belles voitures exotiques comme ce cabriolet Porsche 911 Carrera 2 « Works Turbo Look » type 964 de 1992, qui a été livré neuf à « El Diego » en novembre 1992 durant sa dernière saison en Europe.

Après avoir mené son équipe à la victoire en coupe de l'UEFA et à la coupe du monde en 1986, (on se souvient du fameux but de « la main de Dieu » dans le match contre l'Angleterre en quart de finale), Maradona fut acheté par le manager de l'équipe de Séville et l'ancien coach d'Argentine Carlos Bilardo pour 750 million de pesetas (environ 5 millions d'euros).

« El Diego » reçut un accueil de star en arrivant à Séville, l'équipe et les supporters espérant qu'il apporterait avec lui le « Maradona Magic » qui lui avait permis de donner deux titres en série A à Naples et à gagner l'adulation des tifosi italiens, avant de connaître l'ignominie, interdit de jeu pendant quinze mois pour avoir été testé positif à un contrôle anti-dopage.

Nommé capitaine de l'équipe, il loua la villa de Juan Antonio Ruiz Roman, le plus fameux des toreros d'Espagne, et prit livraison du haut de gamme Porsche le 6 novembre 1992. Cette décapotable, l'un des 1 200 cabriolets Carrera 2 type 964 « Works Turbo Look » produits en deux ans, recevait un moteur 3,6 litres de 250 ch qui lui permettait d'atteindre 260 km/h.

On pouvait voir la Porsche conduite par Maradona lorsqu'il se rendait à l'entrainement. On pouvait aussi se rendre compte que son pied droit était aussi important dans la voiture que son pied gauche sur le terrain, ayant été arrêté par la police pour avoir grillé un feu rouge et avoir roulé à plus de 180 km/h dans le centre ville (voir coupures de presse au dossier).

Malgré un bon départ avec une victoire 3 à 1 devant le Bayern de Munich dans un match amical, Maradona fit les gros titres en raison de sa vie débridée en dehors du stade.
Son rappel dans l'équipe nationale d'Argentine marqua le début de la fin de sa « saison oublié » avec Séville et Maradona quitta le club en juin 1993.

Un document au dossier montre que la Porsche passa aux mains d'un certain Anjelica Bartel de Calvià, à Majorque le 25 septembre 1993 à 7 500 kilomètres. Des factures et d'autres documents du dossier suggèrent que le propriétaire suivant était M. Bruno Hintze de Ville-d'Avray, en France (vers 2000) suivi de M. Jacques Rouy de Jarny, en France (vers 2001) puis de M. Guy Della Casa de Montbard, en France. M. Della Casa acquit la Porsche en janvier 2003 et la conserva jusqu'en 2016 lorsqu'il la céda au vendeur.

La garantie originale et le carnet d'entretien sont au nom de Maradona et ont été tamponnés à six occasions, la dernière fois par JB Racing en 2004 à environ 105 300 kilomètres. Une facture montre que la Porsche a été repeinte par un professionnel dans sa couleur d'origine au cours de l'hiver 2016/2017, les joints ayant été remplacés à cette occasion. On trouvera aussi diverses factures d'entretien et des contrôles techniques montrant le compteur passer de 118 753 kilomètres en 2011 à 121 493 kilomètres en 2016. Le compteur affiche aujourd'hui 122 762 kilomètres. Récemment révisé par le Porsche Centre de Bonn et prêt à prendre la route, ce rare cabriolet Porsche 911 Carrera 2, autrefois propriété du plus grand footballer de sa génération, représente le summum des icône du sport.
