A John Browning Spectroscope Microscope Accessory, English, circa 1880,

signed John Browning 63 Strand, London, with micrometer screw adjustment to the eyepiece, in fitted mahogany case,
8in (20cm) long

Footnotes

This accessory was championed by its maker John Browning (1831-1925) as a perfected arrangement which could be applied to the eyepiece of a microscope, replacing the ordinary eyepiece. First offered in 1877 for a price of 8 pounds and 5 shillings, the spectroscope was advertised as being able to 'indicate plainly the minutest quantity' of blood, adulterations in food, and the minutiae of leaves and plants.
