Footnotes

Provenance:
From the collection of Dr MacKinnon.

Joseph Hurt was a renowned optician known to have sold instruments from 1736-1748, advertising a comprehensive range of optical and mathematical material. Hurt was apprenticed to Ralph Sterrop in 1729, but within six years was operating under his own name at Archimedes & Three Golden Spectacles in Ludgate Street, London. In this same year he was called to the Guild of Spectaclemakers. Occasionally Hurt advertised with the alternative surname of Hurst.
