ATTRIBUTED TO SENGO MURAMASA (Active circa 1500)

An Ise katana
Muromachi period (1333-1573), circa 1500
Sugata (configuration): honzukuri, iorimune, o-gissaki, slight koshizori
Kitae (forging pattern): itame hada mixed with masame hada with prominent jinie
Hamon (tempering pattern): wide suguha in the upper portion becoming toranba halfway down, mirrored on both sides, with ko-nie
Boshi (tip): ko-maru
Horimono (carving): bo-hi on both sides
Nakago (tang): slightly machi-okuri, tanagobara with katte sagari file marks and two holes
Habaki (collar): one-piece gold-foil, worked on the surface
Nagasa (length from tip to beginning of tang): 27 1/8in (68.9cm)
Motohaba (width at start of tempered edge): 1 1/4in (3.1cm)
Sakihaba (width before tip): 15 1/6in (2.4cm)
Th 19th-century koshira-e comprising a brownish-red and black-lacquer saya fitted with a russet-iron kojiri decorated with a stylized dragon in silver zogan, the tsuka wrapped in black cord and fitted with russet-iron fuchi-gashira decorated with a temple and gate in low relief with gilt highlights, the shakudo and gilt menuki formed as chrysanthemums, the iron mokko gata tsuba decorated with young pines in brass inlay
