International Director
蒙古 十八/十九世紀 大威德金剛唐卡
At the center of the composition, Vajrabhairava passionately embraces his consort, Vajravetali. A wrathful manifestation of Manjushri, Vajrabhairava is one of the three principal meditational deities of the Gelug school, along with Guhyasamaja and Chakrasamvara. Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug school, appears above the wrathful couple and flanked by his two disciples. At the bottom, Yama Dharmaraja, Shadbuja Mahakala, Palden Lhamo, and Vaishravana manifest before alternating grey and orange flames. The present work compares favorably to another closely related thangka of Vajrabhairava, of similar composition and figural treatment, preserved at the Zanabazar Museum of Fine Arts, Ulaanbaatar (HAR50066).
