越南 陳朝 十三世紀 貼花魚紋陶蓋罐
The unglazed exterior of this important baluster form jar has been coated with iron oxide that has fired to a dark brown. Its surface is textured with finely incised vertical lines from foot to shoulder. In between two raised ridges around the shoulder are eight koi carp alternating in size, the larger fish having a perceptible smile. Remarkably, the present lot survives with its original lid which has three more applied koi and a lotus bud finial.
As Zetterquist notes:
"This is an exceptionally rare and ornate version of this type ware. The appliqués are unusual and beautifully realized, and the size and condition of the piece, with its original lid, are exemplary."
Compare a simpler jar in the Saigon National Museum, published in Brown, The Ceramics of South-East Asia, 2000, pl.1d.
