This painting of a classic subject in Indian miniatures has a delightful palette. The bather's burnt orange sari worn from the waist down finds a pleasing harmony with the painting's red borders, rooting our attention on her at the center and the garment's alluring translucency. Against a steel-blue background, she washes her long black hair. Having kicked off her golden slippers, she stands on a magenta and gold, pearl encrusted bathing platform. The surrounding white marble terrace has accents of lavender and mint-green. The many colors are echoed by the tall flowering tree behind her.
Compare similar aspects of the terrace and figural treatment with a slightly earlier Bundi painting from 1770-80, and the eye and borders of a contemporaneous, Bundi painting from 1780-90, which are both in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond (68.8.98 & 68.8.100).
