PICCARD, AUGUSTE & JEAN.
FIRST ASCENT INTO THE STRATOSPHERE.
2 items:
1. Postcard Signed ("A. Piccard" & "Paul Kipfer"), 90 x 138 mm, postmarked May 28, 1931, being a photo postcard signed by Piccard and Paul Kipfer directly after their historic ascent into the stratosphere, May 27, 1931, with a note stating: "griesse aus Oebergurgl mit dem stratospheren fliegern / Dorothy Fischer" and apparently sent by Fischer via air mail to relatives in New York City.
Piccard and his assistant Kipfer would ascend 9.8 miles in a hot-air balloon, becoming the first to enter the stratosphere. An emergency necessitated a landing in Obergurgl in Tyrol, Austria where this card was signed.
2. Cover Signed ("Jean Piccard"), 88 x 151 mm, being an air mail cover postmarked August 4th, 1933, the day before Jean Piccard, twin brother of Auguste, and Lt. Commander Settle would attempt to surpass the altitude flight record.
