AIRMAIL: AMUNDSEN-ELLSWORTH EXPEDITION 1919
UMBERTO NOBILE-SIGNED NORTH POLE-FLOWN.
Flown photographic postcard Signed ("U. Nobile"), 87 x 135 mm, silver gelatin print, 1926, featuring the Norge and its crew, with "Volo Transpolare 1926 / Amundsen-Ellsworth-Nobile" cancel over the special expedition airmail stamp.
*With:
Flown cover, 122 x 151 mm, "Via Aerea - Esplorazione Polare Nobile (Dirigibile Italia) 1928" printed across top, multiple postmarks including Tromso, Milan and Genoa, the latest dated August 8, 1928.
*And with:
2 pairs of 1926 North Pole Expedition stamps, unperforated, 49 x 80 mm each pair.
Umberto Nobile was the designer and pilot of the semi-rigid airship Norge which, led by Roald Amundsen, flew the first verifiable flight over the North Pole. He had a nearly identical airship built, the Italia, and led another polar expedition in 1928. Unfortunately that airship crashed 30km north of Nordaustlandet and the rescue effort was protracted with multiple rescuers, including Roald Amundsen, perishing. The present cover was apparently flown and returned from that failed expedition. Remarkable.
