Rolls, one of the founders of Rolls-Royce along with Henry Royce, was also an aviation enthusiast. He purchased a Wright Flyer in late 1909 and made more than 200 flights, including a double-crossing of the English Channel, before he became the first Englishman to perish in an airplane accident on July 12, 1910.
