BALLOON MAIL: 1903
LIFE-BOAT SATURDAY.
Picture postcard, 137 x 89 mm, postmarked September 7th, 1903 at Burton on Trent and September 6th, place illegible, postmarked September 7th, 1903 at Burton on Trent and September 6th, place illegible, originally addressed to Rosliston Vicarage, Burton on Trent, but crossed through and "Rotherstoke / Rotherham" added, sender listed as Social Club, Manchester, August 25, 1903.
"Life-Boat Saturday" was a charity event for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution - hence the image of a hot-air balloon floating over a coastal area, waiving to a sailor below, "Life-Boat Saturday" emblazoned on the balloon. People were able to donate by paying for a post card that would flown by balloon and later posted to their final destination. A penciled note on the post card reads: "Posted here & taken up by balloon, then dropped & posted by finder / Chas."
