MONTGOLFIER, JOSEPH-MICHEL. 1740-1810.

Autograph Letter Signed ("J. Montgolfier"), 2 pp recto and verso, 4to. Paris, 14 Brumiere, an 11 (November 4, 1802), to Gabriel Fontaine of New York, with integral autograph address leaf, moderate toning and creasing overall.

An affectionate letter from the elder Montgolfier brother Joseph-Michel, who with his brother Jacques-Etienne, pioneered hot air ballooning, to a friend, who may be the young Fontaine who at the last minute leapt into the basket of the first balloon flight in 1784, joining Joseph Montgolfier and five others. In this letter, Joseph-Michel reports on problems with Fontaine's son and financial affairs, and encourages him to return to France as soon as possible.
