APPLE eMATE 300
PROTOTYPE OF APPLE'S ONLY TOUCHSCREEN LAPTOP.
Apple Computer, c.1997. Translucent blue-green molded plastic casing with fold-up 6.8-inch screen revealing keyboard and with stylus fitted above. Labeled on the underside: "A2015 / PROTOTYPE. NOT FOR RESALE."
The eMate 300 was directed toward the educational market and meant to be a low-cost, portable, easy-to-use computer for children. The translucent plastic case was a major shift away from Apple's "dark period" where all of their hardware was either platinum gray or charcoal gray and certainly not as "friendly" as this or what would come. Although Steve Jobs ended Newton OS, which is the operating platform on which this was based, he had stated that he appreciated elements of the eMate 300. Of course, the colorful translucent plastic and playful curves would return in a more focused and coherent design in the popular iMac released in 1998. The above example is a prototype, rarely seen on the market. Certainly a key piece in Apple Computer's evolution.
