Hartmut Esslinger and his design firm Frogdesign were first contracted by Apple in 1982. Steve Jobs had long admired Esslinger's work for Sony. The Apple IIc was the first product they designed and introduced the "Snow White design language" that Apple would use for their products through the 1980s. The IIc was voted Design on the Year by the Whitney Museum of Art and Time and is considered by many to be the most elegantly designed personal computer of all time. It was an integrated system with a perfectly matched monitor and monitor stand. Although it didn't contain batteries, the IIc was intended to be portable and featured a fold-out handle at the back.
Frogdesign-designed products were released by Apple through 1990, but Esslinger followed Steve Jobs to NeXT and was responsible for that company's innovative designs.
