Provenance: Dave Larson, Product Marketing Manager for the Apple IIe and the Apple IIc.

Dave Larson led the launch of the Apple IIe including a successful campaign to promote the Apple IIe, the 3rd in the Apple II series. It was well received by both the computer press and the public who appreciated the upgrade of the Apple II plus with no cost increase It was the last surviving model in the II series having remained on the market relatively unchanged for almost 11 years.
Larson was rewarded for his success by being assigned to lead the Apple IIc launch team.

In Larson's words:

Those days were crazy. The day after my daughter, Chelsea, was born in July 1983, I was told that I was promoted from running the International launch of the IIe to running the US launch as well and it was a dash to get it on the market by January.
This launch was about replacing the original Apple II+ with a new version that had lots of new features, worked with existing peripherals and software, so it was easy to integrate into the product line. The launch was at the Boston Computer Society [the complete presentation viewable online] and the Apple IIe was a success for years.
My engineering partner and closest friend, Peter Quinn, and I had never done this before, so we had to learn and execute fast. We were living "dog years" since we had to pack seven years of learning into one year! One vivid memory is meeting with our boss before Christmas before our upcoming launch and we were nervous since the Apple II was the primary income of the company. His response was 'if you guys haven't figured it by now, there's nothing I can do, so I'm going on vacation.'

Upon completion of the launch of the IIe, we began the development of the IIc which was originally code named Chels after my daughter. Code names changed frequently, so very few people knew what we were doing and others were confused which was the point until we were ready to manufacture.

The IIc was a much more complex launch since it involved not only a new compact computer design but also matching monitor, monitor stand, and other peripheral hardware products, along with new software, tutorials, docs, and consumer oriented packaging. The IIc was launched at a major event at the Moscone Center as an earthquake shook the building. The IIc followed the Mac launch in January 1984 with a goal of 100k units in 100 days and we had a goal of 50k units for first day sales which was a big number at the time and the sales team pulled it off!

The "Flak Jacket" was given to me at an off-site prior to the launch of the Apple IIc in late April 1984. I was the guy that took the "flak" as the leader of the launch teams for Apple IIe in 1983 and IIc in 1984 as Director of Apple II Marketing.

The jacket was predominately signed at the end of a senior staff meeting, although Steve Wozniak signed later, but before it was presented to Larson.
Inscriptions include:
"steve jobs," "Woz," "5/1 or bust / Al Eisenstat" [executive vice president, general counsel and board member, referring to the launch date of the Apple IIc], "The GCC/PCS whole team is with you," "LJR / Your product is near my heart," "'YOU GREW A HELL OF A LOT' / DON'T OUTGROW THIS AND SINK! / LOVE APG," "JOHN SCULLEY," "MARKETING LOVES YOU! / BILL CAMPBELL" [Vice President of Marketing, later head of Claris Division and upon Steve Jobs' return served as a corporate director on Apple's board of directors], "Roy Weaver" [Vice President of Apple Field Operations], "Del Yocam" [then Vice President and general manager of the Apple II group, later executive vice president and Apple's first COO], "Ken Zerbe" [Kenneth R. Zerbe, executive vice president.]
Items signed by the executive team that include Jobs and Wozniak are rarely seen.
