OPERATION SANDSTONE

FORMERLY CLASSIFIED FILM.
10 1/2-inch metal reel of 16mm film in canister marked 19-12, with Lookout Mt. label, about 750 feet of film, outer lidded box with cloth buckled straps, titled "OPERATION SANDSTONE 1948 / CAREY WILSON," Lookout Mt. Laboratory label and Sol Lesser Productions mailing label addressed to Lookout Mt. Lab.
Provenance: Lt. Col. James Gaylord, Commander of Lookout Mountain Laboratory.

Formerly classified film of the third in the series of nuclear weapon tests. Operation Sandstone was carried out at the Pacific Proving Grounds, specifically at Enewetak Atoll. Three total blasts were carried out: X-Ray, Yoke and Zebra. The film was one of the many produced by the United State Air Force's Lookout Mountain Laboratory and would have been shown to a very select audience of military leaders, contractors and politicians with clearance.
