EARLY SPACE SHUTTLE MODEL
SPACE SHUTTLE RUNNER-UP.
Space Shuttle Concept Model, approximately 35 x 22 inches, [circa 1971], mixed materials on wooden base, George C. Marshall Space Flight Center label with "Space Shuttle." 1:96 scale model.
The Space Shuttle has its origins in the 1950s with the Air Force's X-20 Dyna-Soar spaceplane as well as early work on aircraft with lifting bodies. George Mueller, head of NASA Office of Manned Space Flight, announced the plan for a reusable shuttle on August 10, 1968. NASA released a request for proposal for an Integrated Launch and Re-entry Vehicle (ILRV), which was a four-phase approach rather than a contract awarded based upon initial proposals. General Dynamics, Lockheed, McDonnell Douglas and North American Rockwell were all part of the first phase which was a request for studies.
This large, Class III model (reusable orbiter and booster), looks to be the McDonnell Douglas design from Phase B. It appears to be a progression of Project Mercury designer Maxime "Max" Faget's "DC-3" design. The delta winged orbiter is mated with what appears to be a flyback manned booster. McDonnell Douglas's design used a titanium structure with a thermal protection system of metallic cobalt super alloy and columbium leading edge panels.
