Dr Max Faget's Presentations and Awards

Includes:
1. Apollo 11 Manned Flight Awareness Medallion. A 1 ¼ diameter circular medallion containing space flown material held in a 3 ¾ tall by 2 ½ inch wide plastic display holder which reads: "Apollo 11 Medallion, for your contribution to the United States Space Program. Second anniversary of the First Manned Lunar Landing, July 20, 1971." The medallion reverse side reads: "This medallion contains metal from spacecrafts Columbia and Eagle that took Astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins on their historic Apollo 11 mission that resulted in the first landing of man on the Moon."
2. Apollo 11 lunar rock. A two-inch tall replica of a lunar volcanic basalt fragment, one the lunar samples originally collected by Astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin during man's first lunar surface exploration of July 20-21, 1969. Contained within 3 ½ inch tall, 2 ¼ inch wide and deep plastic cube display case. The outer front of the case reads: "AIAA Banquet, 10th Anniversary, First Lunar Landing, Houston, 20 July 1979." The base interior of the cube has description of the sample which was classified as Apollo 11 sample number "10022" having a weight of "96 Earth grams."
3. IBM Certificate. A printed card displayed within a 3 ½ tall by 6 inch wide lucite display. Issued by the IBM Electronics Systems Center. It reads: "This is to certify that Dr. Maxime A. Faget has successfully completed a course in Aerospace Executive Computer Concepts, Customer Executive Program, which was held during September 24-28, 1973." It has the printed signatures of the V.P and General Manager of IBM ESC and the president of IBM Federal Systems Division.
4. Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) Team presentation. A 10-inch tall, 4-inch wide (at base) wood and metal gift to Dr. Faget. A plaque at the bottom reads: "Max Faget, You Engineered Man into Space. Thanks from the EMU Team." The center part of the wood base has a silver colored metal Space Shuttle. The top features a pewter 4-inch tall shuttle astronaut in a EMU space suit. The astronaut is removeable from the wood base.
5. Washington Space Award. A 5-inch tall, 3-inch wide presentation featuring a 3-inch diameter frosted glass earth glob on a black base. A plaque on the base reads: "Presented to Maxime A. Faget, Washington Space Business Round Table, 1987 Industry Award."
6. Glenn L. Martin Medal. A 3-inch diameter bronze medal housed in a 4 ½ inch square presentation case. The medal's reverse side reads: "University of Maryland Aerospace Engineering, Outstanding Achievement" and engraved with: "Max Faget, October 16, 2000." Martin (1886-1955) was an early aviation pioneer and founder of the aerospace giant, The Martin Company. It later merged with Marietta (1961) and finally with Lockheed in 1995.

Dr. Maxime "Max" A. Faget (1921–2004) received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Louisiana State University in 1943, then served as a U.S. Navy submarine officer in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in 1946. When NACA became NASA in 1958, he was heavily involved in Project Mercury as the lead spacecraft designer and developed the concept for the Mercury escape rocket which was later applied during the Apollo Program. His next work was in the development of the Space Shuttle during the very late 1960's and early 1970's. During his career he wrote or co-author dozens of technical papers and books on many topics relating to aircraft, rocketry, spacecraft design and reentry. Dr. Faget retired from NASA in 1981.
