FREEDOM 7 MISSION: U.S.S. LAKE CHAMPLAIN

RECOVERY OF THE FIRST U.S. MAN IN SPACE.
Album containing photographs taken aboard U.S.S. Lake Champlain, May 5, 1961, together with an envelope postmarked from the ship on the day of the flight, a printed and annotated telegram send to Cape Canaveral regarding film footage of the spacecraft recovery, and several contemporary newspaper clippings. Contains 67 black and white 4 x 5 inch prints, most taken on board Lake Champlain, but also including some NASA stock images; and 12 color images, 2.5 x 3.5 and 3.5 x 3.5 inches. The telegram is marked in blue pencil "Orig copy sent Cape Canaveral by United Press and NASA representatives, OPR Peters RM3, Supvr Wean RM1," and the text of the message reads "HANEY/POWERS - TERRIFIC FILM ON WAY. EVERYONE HERE'SYSTERICALLY [sic] HAPPY WITH WORD AND PICTURE COVERAGE. CHAMPLAIN CREW HAS DONE MAGNIFICENT JOB. ALIBRANDO." The envelope is addressed to Mrs. Eugene Wean of Quincy, MA, presumably from the Supervisor Wean mentioned in the note on the telegram. The album bound in red card covers, 350 x 270 mm, bound with red cord. Album slightly rubbed, newspaper clippings browning, telegram with tape residue on edges.

Freedom 7 (Mercury/Redstone 3) was NASA's first manned spaceflight, in which Alan Shepard piloted the spacecraft on a 15 minute a sub-orbital flight before splashing down in the North Atlantic. U.S.S. Lake Champlain completed the recovery flawlessly, getting Shepard and his capsule safely aboard within 11 minutes of splashdown. The photos here include shots showing the helicopter pulling Shepard from the craft, lowering the capsule onto the deck, Shepard's examination after the flight, as well as stock photos of the liftoff, Earth from suborbital space, Shepard's NASA Distinguished Service Medal and award certificate, and several of the ship's crew getting a close look at the capsule.
