APOLLO 12: INSURANCE COVER
SIGNED BY THE CREW.
Apollo 14 Insurance Cover, Type 1, Apollo 14 emblem in colors, First Man on Moon 10 cent stamp, November 14, 1969 Kennedy Space Center cancel, addressed to: "Mr. Don Rickles / 925 Alpine Drive / Beverly Hills, Calif 90210."
Provenance: Estate of Don & Barbara Rickles.
SIGNED BY CHARLES CONRAD, DICK GORDON AND ALAN BEAN.
These NASA covers were created to provide a type of "life insurance" for the families of the astronauts while the latter made their dangerous journeys to the moon. If the astronauts were lost, the insurance covers would become valuable and could be sold to provide funds for the families.
Insurance covers were created for Apollo missions 11 through 16. Shortly before each flight to the moon, the three crew members would take time from their training to sign each cover. A limited number of covers were created for each flight, with between 100 and 300 examples made for each astronaut's family and held by them until the flights ended safely.
