SUPERSONIC AIRCRAFT: WIND TUNNEL MODEL
B-70 SUPERSONIC BOMBER.
Aluminum wind tunnel model, approximately 13 1/2 x 9 inches, [North American Aviation, 1950s], "B-12"(?) in marker on top side, apparently the delta wing of the never-completed project.
The B-70 was a North American Aviation concept supersonic bomber which was to be capable of cruising for thousands of miles at Mach 3 at 70,000 feet. It was intended as the replacement for the B-52, but the Soviet surface-to-air missiles introduced in the late 1950s put the practicality of the supersonic bomber in doubt. The project made it to the prototype stage with the XB-70 Valkyrie. The present piece would have been created to test the delta wing formation at some point along the development stage.
