GEMINI IV: NASA "RED NUMBER" PHOTOGRAPH
THE FIRST SPACEWALK.
Color photograph, 8 x 10 inches, 1965, with red NASA indentification number in margin: S-65-30431, "A Kodak Paper" watermarks on verso.
Breathtaking image of Ed White on the first extravehicular activity by an American astronaut. Along with Command Pilot James McDivitt, the two orbited the Earth 66 times during the 4-day mission. The EVA was a highlight for Ed White. The Hand-Held Maneuvering Unit (called a "zip gun" by some of the astronauts) is visible as is the Earth below. White was reluctant to return to the spacecraft when his time with up and said upon entering: "I'm coming back in ... and it's the saddest moment of my life."
