SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS
A PIECE OF THE TRANSATLANTIC FLYER.
Valve Spring Washer from Spirit of St. Louis Wright J-5 Whirlwind Radial Engine, 1927, affixed to center of shield-form presentation plaque, approximately 9 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches, dark stained wood, with metal "Wright Aviation Engine" circular metal emblem surrounding and engraved metal placard reading: "VALVE SPRING WASHER FROM WRIGHT ENGINE FLOWN BY COL. CHARLES LINDBERG [SIC] FROM NEW YORK TO PARIS / MAY 1927."
Unusual presentation apparently from Wright Aeronautical, who had overhauled the Spirit of St. Louis engine at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey in October of 1927, after Lindbergh's celebratory U.S. Tour. The piece would likely have been collected at that time—and the plaque seems to date from the period. Curiously, Lindbergh's name is misspelled.
