Unusual Sikhote-Alin
Iron-Nickel
Sikhote-Alin, Siberia, Russia
This unusual meteorite displays characteristics of both types of Sikhote-Alin specimens. The large meteorite body broke up twice during its fall to Earth; the higher breakup produced meteorites with regmaglypts, the lower breakup created shrapnel type meteorites. One side of the present specimen is covered with small sized regmaglypts and the other side exhibits sharp, sheared edges. The large sharp central peak on the top portion evokes an animal's claw. Having fallen on Feb. 12, 1947, in Siberia, Sikhote-Alins are the best preserved of all known iron-nickel meteorites. Meteorites with such unusual shapes are highly valued by collectors. Weighing approximately 201.8 grams and measuring 2 ¼ x 1 ¾ x 1 in
