Extinct Scale Insect in Burmite Amber

Burmacoccus
Cretaceous
Hukawng Valley, Myanmar (Burma)

Many of the insects in the 100-million-year-old amber known as Burmite, found in the Hukawng Valley in Northern Burma (Myanmar) are similar in shape to existing insects; however, they are extinct. Burmacoccus is an extinct scale insect genus. Scale insects are strange looking sap-sucking insects which appear to have many legs, but the extra legs are waxy fingers secreted by special glands in the female which also coat the body of the insect. They are called scale insects because this waxy secretion resembles the scales of a reptile. Scale insects are one of the few insects that are hermaphrodites. The present insect specimen is entombed in a high quality clear Burmite nugget. Insect measuring approximately 4.5mm; Amber measuring 18 x 12 x 7mm
