Brittle Starfish

Furcaster
Devonian
Bundenbach Southeast Germany

Large and complete, this brittle starfish from the Devonian Period is in the black slate matrix in which it was discovered. The pyritized 400-million-year-old fossils of Bundenbach have been eagerly sought by fossil collectors since the Bundenbach pits were closed. Brittle stars have five thin arms which were used to filter food, including small sea creatures and detritus, on the ocean bottom. Bundenbach black slate was mined for roofing tiles as early as the 16th century. Specimen measuring 4 3/4 in; Matrix measuring 11 x 5 ½ in
