Obsidian and Multi-gem Carving of a Eurasian Hoopoe by Peter Muller

Hoopoes are colorful birds found across Africa, Asia and Europe which are notable for their distinctive "crown" of feathers. The English name is onomatopoeic in that it imitates the cry of the bird. They were considered sacred in ancient Egypt and several municipalities in Germany feature the Hoopoe in their coat of arms. The bird is seen here carved of black obsidian, yellow calcite with white quartz, a carnelian beak and gold vermeil feet, raised on a base of diopside, on an acrylic base.
