RARE NON-NACREOUS PINK PEARL--"SPONDYLUS OR SPINY OYSTER PEARL"
Sea of Cortez, Baja California, Mexico
There are many species of Spondylus, varying considerably in appearance and territorial range. They are related to the scallops, but like the true oysters they cement themselves to rocks, rather than attaching themselves by a byssus. Their key characteristic is that the two parts of their shells are hinged together with a ball and socket type of hinge, rather than a toothed hinge as is more common in other bivalves. The present non-nacreous pearl of pink hue is near-spherical and displays a porcellanous surface luster and a beautiful pink color particularly at the apex and bottom. It is large in size for this species. Weighing approximately 11.64 carats and measuring 12.03 x 11.94mm
