The Ames family, originating from Massachusetts, first gained prominence in American history by being one of the world's largest manufacturers of tools. What began in 1774 as an iron shovel metalsmith quickly grew by providing the tools necessary for the building of the new nation and aiding in the success of the Union Army during the Civil War. The Ames family is also credited with being the single most important influence in the building of the Transcontinental Railroad under president Abraham Lincoln. With this illustrious background, members of the Ames family went on to be members of the United States Congress, doctors, lawyers, business leaders and a governor of Massachusetts.
This extraordinary sapphire ring by Cartier was acquired by the Ames family in the early twentieth century and has remained in the family for generations. Of Sri Lankan (Ceylon) origin, with no gemological evidence of heat or clarity enhancement, this ring is a superb example of sapphires from Sri Lanka and is an impressive size of over 18.00 carats. Designed and created by Cartier, the legendary French jewelry firm, this sapphire ring is a wonderful piece of American history. Bonhams is pleased to be offering a jewel of such provenance, which rarely come to auction.
