Footnotes

Accompanied by Gübelin report no. 17059011, dated 18 May 2017, stating that the sapphire, weighing 48.38 carats, is of Sri Lanka (Ceylon) origin, with no indications of heating.

Accompanied by AGL report no. 1075074, dated 26 January 2017, stating that the sapphire, weighing 48.38 carats, is of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) origin, with no gemological evidence of heat and no clarity enhancement.

In addition to color and size, the country of origin is one of the most important factors in determining the value of fine sapphires. Sapphire sources have been discovered across the globe, from the USA to Tanzania to Thailand. However, the three most historically important sapphire sources are Kashmir, Burma (Myanmar) and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Sapphires from these sources command some of the highest prices-per-carat of all gem-quality colored stones.

Another consideration for gemstone collectors is treatment. Most sapphires have received some level of heat treatment to improve their color and clarity. Only about 1% of the sapphires mined today are gem-quality stones, thus untreated sapphires are extremely rare and are priced at a premium. Bonhams is pleased to offer this important 48.38 carat untreated Ceylon (Sri Lanka) sapphire.
