A fine and large Flight and Barr mug by John Pennington, circa 1800

Of cylindrical form with a distinctive double scroll handle, the large oval gilt-edged panel painted in sepia monochrome by Pennington with a 'View of Worcester', depicting Worcester Cathedral and the Flight & Barr Royal China Manufactory, reflected in the waters of the River Severn, between gilt line borders, 16.8cm high, title, crown and 'Flight & Barr, Worr. Manufacturers to their Majesties' in sepia script

Footnotes

The view of Worcester is clearly taken from the engraving that appears in the History and Antiquities of the City and Suburb of Worcester, first published in 1795 by Valentine Green. The original drawing for this was commissioned from James Ross by the Flights and was sold by Phillips on 18 September 1996, lot 302. Two hundred of the prints were provided to the Flights for their own use. See Henry Sandon, Flight and Barr Worcester Porcelain (1978), p.233. A Flight and Barr jardinière painted with the same view from the Barbara Cavenagh Collection was sold by Bonhams on 13 December 2006, lot 248.

The present lot is of particularly large size. For a pair of smaller mugs of this form, painted with sepia figural panels, see Henry Sandon, ibid. p.41 pl.25.
