A rare Nantgarw small vase, circa 1818-20

With a broad everted rim and a finely turned foot, painted in London with garlands of colourful flowers pendant from a turquoise border edged with raised paste foliate gilding, an elaborate rococo border inside the rim, 5.5cm high

Footnotes

The thickly potted and finely turned foot seen on this vase is characteristic of a range of Nantgarw vases and tazze which appear to be rather individual in their precise shape and form. The distinctive gilded border on this lot is closely related to those found on a dessert service painted with copies of 17th century Flemish paintings. The decoration of this service is attributable to Powells on the basis of its similarity to a plate in the National Museum and Gallery in Cardiff, inscribed to the reverse 'J Powell 91 Wimpole Street'. A similarly decorated but slightly larger vase was sold by Bonhams, 1 December 2010, lot 81.
