A Chelsea-Derby teapot and cover, circa 1778-81

Of attractive small size and made as part of a cabaret service, the tapering body with an angular handle, facetted spout and spirally fluted band above the foot, a pierced gallery around the rim, the spirally fluted cover with a sphinx finial, painted with vases garlanded with pink roses within blue and gilt borders, a foliate meander around the shoulder, 11cm high, gold anchor mark, incised N mark with related small hole inside the footrim (2)

Footnotes

The gold anchor mark suggests that the decoration was applied at Chelsea. The use of the mark at Chelsea from 1770 and by outside decorators in London is discussed by Stephen Mitchell, Chelsea-Derby and the Early Crossed-Batons Useful Wares (2007), pp.22-26. Two teapots of similar shape are illustrated by H G Bradley (ed), Ceramics of Derbyshire (1978), p.146.
