A Lowestoft inscribed mug, dated 1793

Of small size, the scrolled handle with a thumbrest, inscribed in brown enamel with the initials 'M A R 1793', within a pink, shaped oval cartouche, surrounded by regularly spaced colourful cornflower sprigs, the handle and rim picked out in bright blue enamel, 8.1cm high

A very similarly decorated mug inscribed 'F R 1793' from the Paul Collection was sold by Bonhams on 18 May 2011, lot 431. The shared date and last initial may suggest that this mug was commissioned at the same time as the present lot, perhaps for a married couple.
