The example painted by the 'Tulip Painter' is illustrated and discussed by John Howell, Polychrome Decoration at Lowestoft, ECC Trans, Vol.9, Pt.3 (1975), p.260 and pl.157a. It appears to be from the wedding service referred to by Robert Browne, great-grandson of the original potter of that name, in an affidavit of 1895 as 'my father's wedding tea service...all pink flower and white with gold edging'. Howell suggests that the service was made not for Robert Browne's father but for the wedding of his grandfather to Elizabeth Woodthorpe in July 1769. At the time of writing, Howell was not aware of the jug's whereabouts, stating that it had been separated from the majority of the service, which was then held in Truro Museum.
