A rare set of five South Staffordshire enamel counter trays, circa 1770

Of pierced oval form, the larger painted in the centre with a banknote, playing cards and five gold coins, the banknote inscribed 'Govt and Comp of Bank of England/ John Bridget', the four smaller trays with three playing cards, the pink grounds painted with scattered floral sprays, 13.2 and 9.1cm wide (5)

This set was made for use when playing Quadrille, a popular card game in the 18th century.
