A very rare Venetian or façon de Venise latticinio small vase, last third 16th century

Decorated in vetro a fili and vetro a retorti, the slightly compressed globular form decorated with spiralling bands of white latticinio cable alternating with pairs of white tapes extending into the tapered cylindrical neck, 7.7cm high

Footnotes

Provenance
Paul Gresswell-Wilkins Collection

Small latticinio vessels made from a single parison of glass such as this are incredibly rare. The closest parallel to the present example would appear to be a small vase with a shaped foot in the Musée Ariana in Geneva (inv. no.AR 12214), illustrated and discussed by Erwin Baumgartner, Reflets de Venise (2015), pp.140-1, no.51. See also the shaped latticinio vase applied with lion masks and prunts with illustrated by Baumgartner (2015), pp.138-9, no.50 which has virtually identical vetro a fili and a retorti decoration. All have very faint red tooling marks to the base of their necks, suggesting that they are of closely related manufacture.
