A Neale black basalt vase and a Wedgwood black basalt mug, circa 1780-1800

The vase applied with swags of husks suspended from handles moulded in the form of the head of a woman, applied on one side with a medallion of Apollo and Marsyas inscribed 'LAV.R.MED', 24.5cm high, the mug of large size, applied with two cupids carrying a stag's head flanked by an engine-turned band, a silver mount around the foot and rim, 19.5cm, impressed WEDGWOOD (2)

Footnotes

The medallion on the vase is inscribed 'LAV.R.MED'. This is the mark of Lorenzo di Medici, added to medallions in his collection in the mid fifteenth century. A similar Neale vase with a different medallion is illustrated by Diana Edwards, Black Basalt (1994), p.209, fig.316 (right).
