A saltglaze plaque of identical design and inscribed to the reverse with the name 'Wm Simpkin' is in the British Museum, accession number 1919,0503.79. See also Diana Edwards, 'The Influence of Salt-Glazed Stoneware on Creamware' in Creamware or Pearlware Re-examined (2007), pp.151-2, where another creamware example is illustrated. The mould used for the saltglaze example appears to have been adapted for the creamware versions, including the present lot, as the inscription 'Christ Crucified' has been omitted. Edwards supposes this may indicate that these versions were intended for export.
