Two rare Bacchus concentric millefiori paperweights, circa 1850

One with a central blue silhouette cane of a young Queen Victoria, set within two rows of composite canes in pastel shades of pink, blue and white, within an outer millefiori basket of turquoise-green canes, 6.6cm diam, 4.7cm high, the other with an oversized central red, white and yellow pastry mould cane, within three rows of composite canes, one containing five black silhouettes of Victoria variously facing left and right, within an irregular outer basket of alternating blue and white canes, 5.6cm diam, 2.6cm high (2)

An early Bacchus weight with a central silhouette of Victoria contained within a virtually identical basket of turquoise-green canes as seen in the larger weight is illustrated by Robert G Hall, Old English Paperweights (1998), p.18. The rough pontil scar is characteristic of the earlier examples. A very similar silhouette of Victoria as those in the smaller weight is illustrated by Paul Dunlop, the Dictionary of Glass Paperweights (2009), p.300, fig.543.
