A Bohemian amber-stained goblet and cover attributed to Franz Hansel, Rodowitz, circa 1850-50

The faceted ovoid bowl reserved with an oval panel engraved with a Turkish horseman wearing a toga and holding a spear, holding the reigns of the horse standing by his side, a tent and palm tree in the distance, the reverse with a panel of seven viewing lenses, set on a hexagonal collar and spreading stem, the scalloped foot cut with radiating flutes, the cover and the finial further cut with petal-like barbs, 34.5cm high (2)

Franz Hansel (1802-1883) is noted for his fine engravings of Turkish horseman and for the understated treatment of his compositions. His work is discussed by Paul von Lichtenberg, Glasgravuren des Biedermeier (2004), pp.245-51. A goblet with a very similar panel showing a Saracen figure standing beside his horse attributed to Hansel was sold by Bonhams on 11 December 2013, lot 53.
