An engraved coaching rummer of Wellington interest, circa 1810-20

Possibly Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the bucket bowl decorated with a coach and four horses, inscribed 'Spare not nor Spend too Much/ Be This Thy Care/ Spare but to Spend and Only/ Spend to Spare' and 'Lord Wellington' beneath, the reverse with the initials 'WHN' within a cartouche surmounted by a castle, all within a foliate and barley swag tied with ribbons, above a square 'lemon squeezer' foot, 14.7cm high

Footnotes

The verse is taken from 'Necessary Observations' by Thomas Randolph. A very similar rummer inscribed with a verse from the Bles Collection is illustrated by W A Thorpe, English and Irish Glass (1927), fig.60c. A related coaching rummer from the Ian Robertson Collection is discussed by Delomosne and Son, Engraved Glass from North East England (2013), no.12.
