An engraved Nelson rummer, circa 1806

The generous ovoid bowl decorated with Nelson's catafalque inscribed 'TRAFALGAR', 'NILE' and 'VICT', a three-masted ship inscribed 'VICT' in full sail to the reverse, flanked by 'NELSON'S/ VICTORY/ I.E.W' to one side and 'LORD NELSON/ OCTR 21/ 1805' to the other, set on a collar above a short plain stem and circular foot, 16cm high

The date refers to Nelson's victory at Trafalgar, but also the tragic day Nelson was shot on board HMS Victory. His funeral took place on 9 January 1806. A similarly engraved rummer inscribed with the date of the funeral, also from the Hartshorne Collection was sold by Bonhams on 15 December 2010, lot 63.
