Emeritus Professor Brian Shefton (1919-2012) was one of the country's leading Classical Archaeologist in the post-war period. In 1955 Professor Shefton became a lecturer in the Classics Department at Newcastle, becoming Professor of Greek Art and Archaeology in 1979. Elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1985, he received their Kenyon Medal in 1999. Professor Shefton returned to his birthplace of Cologne to receive the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, honoris causa, in 1989, and was invested with a honorary fellowship in 2005 at Newcastle University. His collection of books and antiquities is now partially retained in the Shefton Gallery of Greek and Etruscan Archaeology at the Great North Museum.
