Footnotes

Since its release in 1979, Alien has achieved an iconic status within the sci-fi genre of film-making. This is in large part due to the 'Chestburster' scene, often described as one of the most memorable moments in cinema history. In this draft of the script, it is actually Dallas, the captain of the Nostromo, played by Tom Skerritt, who suffers this fatal incident.

In the screen version, apart from John Hurt, the actors in this scene were unaware beforehand of exactly what was to unfold, therefore their shock at the gory scene created by the Alien bursting out of Hurt's character's chest was genuine, making the impact of event even more powerful.

Provenance:
The card from Walter Hill reads: 'I believe this script to be a Xerox copy done by production (Fox) at Pinewood - it's an early draft, but it's a faithful copy...'
